Caption Bar: The Caption Bar for the main window displays the <log session name> (<computer name>) - Canary Logger Administrator. <log session name> is displayed when a log session tab is selected. <computer name> is the name of the computer that the Canary Logger Administrator is currently connected to.
File Menu:
New Log Session: Creates a new untitled log session.
Open...: Brings up a dialog box to select a Canary Logger Configuration File, with an .LCF file extension. The configuration file contains all properties for the session including the session name. If an existing log session already uses the same name as the one in the configuration file, the name for the configuration being loaded will be changed to have the number 2 placed on the end of it.
Note: there is an inconsistency when selecting a file while connected to the Canary Logger on a local computer versus a remote computer. On the local computer you will get a standard File Open window that you can use to browse for and select the file. When connected to a remote computer you will get a window that allows you to type the full path to the configuration file from the perspective of the remote logger. The reason for this is the CLILogger process is what loads the configuration file, not the Logger Administrator. The input window will retain the folder of the last configuration file that was loaded or saved.
Close Session: Removes the current log session from the logger. If the session is currently logging, it will stop the logging before removing it.
Close All Sessions: Removes all log sessions from the logger. If any session is currently logging, the Logger will stop the logging before removing it.
Save: Saves the current configuration of the log session to a file. If the session is a new session that was not loaded from a file the Save Configuration As menu option will be used.
Save As...: Brings up a dialog box to save the currently displayed log session to a new Canary Logger Configuration File that usually has an .LCF file extension. The configuration information will be written in ASCII format to this file.
Note: there is an inconsistency when selecting a file while connected to the Canary Logger on a local computer versus a remote computer. On the local computer you will get a standard File Save window that you can use to browse the location and name of the file to be saved. When connected to a remote computer you will get a window that allows you to type the full path to the configuration file from the perspective of the remote logger. The reason for this is the CLILogger process is what saves the configuration file, not the Logger Administrator. The input window will retain the folder of the last configuration file that was loaded or saved.
Recent Files>: Pausing over the Recent Files will cause a submenu to display the 10 most recent files opened from the currently connected Logger. Connecting to another logger will display a different list. As recent files are reopened they are moved to the top of the list.
Exit: Exits the Logger Administrator application. If one or more log sessions exist then the Canary Logger is not closed. The logger continues running just as it was when the Administrator application was connected. A window is displayed asking if any session not currently started should be removed from the logger.
Edit Menu:
The Edit menu is only visible when you have selected a Log Session tab.
The grid of a log session group works a lot like the cells in Excel for editing. If preferred, cells or the entire grid can be selected by clicking the upper left cell and copying the contents and pasting into Excel. Copying everything will also include a header row. This row should also be copied when selecting cells from Excel to paste back into the Logger Administrator. This assures the information is pasted into the correct columns.
Cut: Cuts whatever is selected into the clipboard. If the entire line of one or more trends is selected in the trends grid, the trend(s) will be removed from the grid and placed in the clipboard. If part of the line of one or more trends is selected in the trends grid, those fields will be blanked and placed in the clipboard but the trends will be left in the grid. Note: this can also be accomplished through the right-click context menu on the trends grid.
Copy: Copies whatever is selected into the clipboard. Note: this can also be accomplished through the right-click context menu on the trends grid.
Paste: Copies the contents of the clipboard to whatever is selected if possible.
If a cell in the trends grid is selected, the text will be pasted into the grid starting with the row of the cell that is selected. The behavior of the paste varies based on how the text was put in the clipboard. If the text was placed in the clipboard from a cut or copy from the trends grid, then the text will be placed in the same column(s) that it was copied from. If the text was placed in the clipboard from a different source and there are multiple columns of text in the clipboard, the text will be placed in successive columns in the grid. The new text will replace any existing text in the cells that are affected. If there are more rows in the clipboard than can fit in the grid from the selected row, new rows will automatically be added to the end of the grid. Note: this can also be accomplished through the right-click context menu on the trends grid.
Paste New Trend(s): This option works the same way as the Paste option except that the new text is automatically placed in new rows at the end of the grid. Note: this can also be accomplished through the right-click context menu on the trends grid.
Undo: This will undo the last text change in most of the edit fields. This only supports one level of undo. This will not undo most changes made to the trends grid.
Add Group: Add a new group to the Log Session. Note: this can also be accomplished through the right-click context menu on the group tabs.
Remove Group: Remove the currently selected group from the Log Session. Note: this can also be accomplished through the right-click context menu on the group tabs.
Browse OPC Server…: Browse the specified OPC server to add trends to the group’s trends grid. For more information on browsing OPC servers see Browse OPC Server. Note: this can also be accomplished through the right-click context menu on the trends grid.
Add Blank Trend: Add a new blank or empty trend row at the end of the trends grid. Note: this can also be accomplished through the right-click context menu on the trends grid.
Delete Selected Trend(s): Delete the trends from the grid that are currently selected. The entire row of the trend(s) must be selected for this option to be available. Note: this can also be accomplished through the right-click context menu on the trends grid.
New step beginning with version 10.1: When trends are removed from a log session an extra step is required to remove the trends from the Historian and any browse dialogs. From the Historian Administrator > Details tab, right-click the DataSet name and select "Mark Tags Obsolete...". If the log session is currently logging, only the tags removed will be available to select. Check the tags to be removed and click "Apply" to perform a DataSet Rollover which will create a new .hdb2 file without the selected trends.
Find…: This option activates the Find and Replace window which allows you to find text in the trends grid. For more information on finding text see Find and Replace. Note: this can also be accomplished through the right-click context menu on the trends grid.
Replace…: This option activates the Find and Replace window which allows you to replace text in the trends grid. For more information on replacing text see Find and Replace. Note: this can also be accomplished through the right-click context menu on the trends grid.
CanaryAdmin:
The HistorianAdmin menu is a shortcut directly to the Historian Administrator program on the local system.
Help Menu:
Getting Started...: Brings up a Help file showing the minimum steps to get started logging data.
Contents...: Bring up the contents tab for this help file.
View Error Log...: Displays the CLIError.log file. The latest error messages are shown at the top.
View SaF Sender Status...: Launches a local web page displaying status information of log sessions sending data through the Store and Forward, Sender Service.
About Canary Logger...: Brings up the About dialog box for the Canary Logger Administrator.
Status Bar: The status bar located at the bottom of the Logger Administrator window gives status information about the Logger which is connected.
The first field shows the Logger computer that is currently connected or ???, if no Logger is connected. It will also display a message when the Administrator is trying to connect or reconnect to a server. In addition, if you click the mouse over this field it will popup a menu containing all of the Loggers in the Available Loggers list. By selecting one of these Loggers, you can easily change which Logger you are connected to at any time.
The second field shows the current state of the trends in the connected Logger. For a complete description of the format of this field see the Available Loggers section.
The next field will only be displayed when a Log Session tab is selected. This field shows the current state of the trends in the selected Log Session. For a complete description of the format of this field see the Available Loggers section.
The next field will occasionally display status messages for the communication between the Logger Administrator and the connected Logger.
The last field shows the version number of the connected Logger.
